Work of the Month, April 2018

April's work of the month is titled 'Cartwright Gardens', 1967, Oil on board. In Peter's final year at the Slade he lived in the Slade hostel, Cartwright Gardens near King's Cross. He was keen to finish this painting for his final show and struggled with it for months. Arriving home from the pub one evening Peter found half the painting had quite literally fallen off the board onto the floor! When he finally took it into college his tutor Frank Auerbach saw the painting and said 'well, it looks as though you may have finally done something!'

The photographs that accompany this are of the painting being loaded onto a porter's trolley to make the half mile journey to Gower Street. In addition we have included a print he made of the same view.
